When I was on break in Florida, I did the obligatory sunbathing despite warnings that the Sun ages your skin. The truth is, time ages your skin and the Sun helps the process along. The fact that the Sun is 93 million miles away from Earth and can do anything is a miracle! It has the energy to provide gravity, life and energy in addition to aging our skin and frying our retinas! My vantage point in Florida pastures where life abounds in every possible niche is always humblin
Most self-awareness books instruct us to value feedback from others. Those of us who are insecure may take one comment and agonize over it, magnify it into truth. A better plan is to identify patterns of feedback. We usually need objective help not to personalize everyone’s random, sometimes self-serving comments. Patterns are instructive. They show us a mirror image of what we’ve created as a ‘self’ in the world. The good news is that we can recreate, reorganize and ree
After my posting last week, many of you took the time to send cards and comment. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I have a few things to share… I was walking in front of my house (feeling especially dogless) and asked Toby to send me a sign. In front of my neighbor’s house was a log. I’m including a picture of it, a stylized profile of Toby. There it was before my eyes. And then there was Nancy Reagan’s funeral. On Friday, waiting for Toby’s ashes to be delive
I’ve been asked a number of times about the difference between religion and spirituality. Since there are increasing numbers of people that claim to be spiritual, but not religious, it’s a valid question. The way I think about this is that religion is a road map, a set of directions that keeps us on course, but that spiritual consciousness is the evolving journey. We can get preoccupied with the road map and forget we are on a journey. This, unfortunately, is the hypocrisy
There is nothing new in the world, just the echo of wisdom stated and restated in a variety of traditions and languages. What is there about our thinking brains that prevents us from yielding to truths greater than those known in our very small, individual lives? No doubt that what we see and hear enters through the filters of our insular experiences. The words we speak are a mirror of those same experiences. Despite larger visions looming, we want to exist outside of the
“The mind is its own place – It can make Hell of Heaven or Heaven of Hell.” John Milton in “Paradise Lost” At some point we have to decide who we are and who we aren’t. The jury is still out on the human mind and its machinations. After all, the body has existed as a entity of wisdom for far longer than the mind. Evolution is unforgiving of those who don’t adapt and the greater the power for good, the greater the potential for destruction. Events in the Middle East with I
Have you noticed that you “feel before you think?” The body is wise and intuitive…the mind can be easily fooled. As I move into the practice of Reiki (light touch energy healing) I realize that it is a validation of what I’ve known all along. As they say in the East, the mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master. My particular mind is capable of all sorts of mischief along with occasional wisdom. Notice the characteristic thought loops that feel familiar to you. T
